Masterpieces of Italian art from the last century get a rare showing at Viareggio’s GAMC – the Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea

“Il Novecento nelle collezioni civiche di Firenze” brings together the work of some of Italy’s most significant painters and sculptors from the last century in what threatens to be the blockbuster show of the Versilia this summer. The more than 80 works on view at Viareggio’s “Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea” (GAMC) make up a truly rare exhibition because the pieces come from the collections of several “Musei Civici” in Florence – and are never usually shown together.

The exhibit is presented in chronological order and traces the unique development of art in Italy during the last century – “the Novecento.” through the paintings and sculptures of: Baccio Maria Bacci, Afro Basaldella, Mirko Basaldella, Vinicio Berti, Renato Birolli, Floriano Bodini, Gino Bonichi (Scipione), Antonio Bueno, Corrado Cagli, Ennio Calabria, Massimo Campigli, Domenico Cantatore, Arturo Carmassi, Carlo Carrà, Felice Casorati, Mauro Chessa, Galileo Chini, Pietro Consagra, Primo Conti, Antonio Corpora, Giovanni Costetti, Roberto Crippa, Giorgio De Chirico, Filippo De Pisis, Piero Dorazio, Agenore Fabbri, Enzo Faraoni, Pericle Fazzini, Ferruccio Ferrazzi, Salvatore Fiume, Lucio Fontana, Oscar Ghiglia, Emilio Greco, Virgilio Guidi, Renato Guttuso, Giovanni Korompay Carlo Levi, Moses Levy, Riccardo Licata, Osvaldo Licini, Mino Maccari, Alberto Magnelli, Mario Marcucci, Marino Marini, Arturo Martini, Carlo Mattioli, Giuseppe Migneco, Sante Monachesi, Giorgio Morandi, Ennio Morlotti, Fausto Pirandello, Domenico Purificato, Mario Radice, Domenico Rambelli, Mario Reggiani, Manlio Rho, Ottone Rosai, Bruno Saetti, Aldo Salvadori, Giuseppe Santomaso Aligi Sassu, Pio Semeghini, Sepo (Severo Pozzati), Gino Severini, Mario Sironi, Ardengo Soffici, Alberto Sughi, Mario Tozzi, Ernesto Treccani, Giulio Turcato, Giuliano Vangi, Emilio Vedova, Lucio Venna, Luigi Veronesi, Alberto Viani, Giuseppe Viviani,  Giuseppe Zigaina,  Antonio Zancanaro.

The impressive exhibit is a co-production of the Comune di Viareggio and the Comune di Firenze; it’s curated by Alessandra Belluomini Pucci – the gallery’s director – and is organized by “Percorsi d’Arte,” who publishes the catalog. The GAMC is one of the best little museums in Tuscany with a wonderful collection of the works of the Versiliese Lorenzo Viani and with regular exhibitions of note – make sure to see “Suggestioni del ‘900: Un viaggio nella collezione Pieraccini” the show running concurrently which features works by Pissarro, Ensor, Soffici, Severini, Kirchner, Chagall, Leger, Guttuso, De Chirico, Casorati, and the gallery’s namesake Lorenzo Viani.
