Joana Vasconcelos exhibits three works – “Red Independent Heart,” “Psycho” and “Lavoisier” at the Palazzo della Mercanzia in Florence, as part of Pitti Uomo.
The Portugese artist’s surprising, colorful and often monumental works take over environments and upend contexts, She finds poetry in de-contextualizing everyday objects, conferring on them mythic narratives, which haunt the meeting of the intimately personal and our shared social experience. She is influenced by the history and culture of Portugal, and by the Fado. The title of one of the works comes from a song by famous Portugese Fado superstar, Amalia Rodrigues.
