Australian tourists caught writing on wall of the Colosseum

The Rome edition of the Italian daily La Repubblica reports that a 45-year old  Australian man and his underage son were caught scratching letters, with a rock, on the ground-floor wall of the Colosseum, in Rome… the two were subsequently arrested by the Carabinieri, who were alerted to the misdeed by security staff.

Upon being discovered the man tried to erase what appeared to be the first three letters of the son’s name (which were scratched, by the son, on top of other graffiti). Police arrested the pair and confiscated the rock used – to determine its  provenance, and eventual historic value.
