“Maddalena in estasi” an until recently un-attributed work by the Italian Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi peaked at a record-breaking 865,500 euros besting by far the estimated 200 – 300,000 it was expected to sell for.
The painting was recently “discovered” – identified and attributed to Artemisia – by a team of experts from Sotheby’s Department of Master Paintings in Paris, in an art collection from the south of France. The painting measures 81cm x 105cm, and features a very human Magdalene enthralled in a state of rapture. A light streaming from above is the only reference to the Divine.
