On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the death of Michelangelo, Pietrasanta hosts a series of exhibitions and events to celebrate the Renaissance Master and his ties to Pietrasanta, and the marble quarries.
The month-long program titled “450 Michelangelo Mindcraft” is slated to take over the city’s main Piazza and its major exhibition spaces.
Two exhibitions are currently ongoing: “Shadow, Dust and a Promise of Future” – which is an event that brings together some of the most important international artists working today, such as Michelangelo Pistoletto, Mona Hatoum, Marina Abramovic, Anthony Gormley, Ai Weiwei, and Anish Kapoor – the garden of the cloister of Sant’Agostino features an installation by Chen Zhen. The exhibition sets out to show the relevance, four centuries on, of the themes explored by Michelangelo.
The second exhibition housed in the former convent of Saint Francis – home of the Centro Arti Visive – is “The Myth of the Swing: Of Time, Beauty and other Human Disasters;” the show features works – sculptures, paintings and photographs – by Vanessa Beecroft, Enrico Castellani, Wim Delvoye, Louise Nevelson, Jannis Kounellis, Damien Hirst, Marc Quinn, and Keith Haring, among others, and it looks at yearning and transcendence.
